Richard Clarke and Courageous Dissidence

1155

In your opinion, which company or person has had the biggest impact on the information security industry within the last 10 years, and why?

Over multiples of years now there have been pockets within the security industry, and some security professionals who have been of the opinion that everything in the garden was rosy. In fact when the topic of such fanciful concerns were raised, such as CyberWar, or CyberConflict, those who dared to voice such outrageous opinions were [from personal experience] shouted down as Scaremongers.  In fact I do recall a conversation with a lady from the Governed Agency CPNI some 6 or more years ago who smiled, and informed me the ‘Cyber situation was just hype’ and then hinted that it was people like myself who were a part of the problem by discussing the subject in public.

So onto the one person who stood up at an RSA event in London, and informed the delegates that the Cyber issue was here, embedded, and was out of the bottle and just would not go back in – words that had our own Director of CESG making a statement on that very same day – after the horse had bolted so-to-speak. That man was Richard Clarke.
